We desired to connect with others and build Christlike friendships. It was easier for me because I started working at Evansville Christian School immediately. For Megan, it was a little more challenging because she started a part-time teaching position nearly half a year later. We learned that if we wanted to build relationships, it would require more than just worshiping on Sunday mornings. Things changed for us when we joined a small group.

What is a small group? A small group is a group of at least three people (and probably should be limited to a number where you don't start saying your group is kind of getting big) that meets regularly (weekly, biweekly, and at least monthly) where you do Christian life deeply together. Small groups meet (1-3 hours) to grow closer to Christ. How does a small group do that? Below are five ways our small group has helped us grow closer to each other and God.

1. We pray with one another. In a small group, we talk about what's happening in our lives and thank God for the good He is doing and going to do. Through prayer, we cheer each other on and remind each other of God's amazing attributes.

2. We study God's Word or a solid book that helps us better understand God's Word. Studying God's Word in a small group helps us see things we aren't seeing. We need to surround ourselves with smarter and wiser people who can teach us a thing or two.

3. We serve one another. Life can be hard so when we need a reliable ride, a trustworthy babysitter, a warm meal, job suggestions, or a listening ear, being part of a small group can help. Good small groups consist of Christlike servants who often set aside their rights.

4. We share our junk. Life can also be messy, and we need accountability. A small group is a place where we can confess our sins with people we trust. A good small group will consist of people who will love us well and display Christ to us.

5. We build friendships. We laugh and we cry. We encourage one another and point each other to the cross. Over time, God knits us together and builds strong relationships that bring Him glory. In a world filled with gossip and grudges, good small groups bring joy to the heart.

Although I often like being alone, I'm so thankful for my small group and all they do to help deepen my faith. How has a small group helped you grow closer to Christ? I would love to hear what you love about your small group and why others should join one!

Wickhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/14805927352863007437noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-951577269167285145.post-72219878821976626362024-01-25T08:22:00.000-08:002024-01-25T08:22:57.024-08:00Ten Ways We've Trained Up Our Kiddos
Being a good parent can sometimes be HARD! We can be a messy bunch, and our communication is sometimes crazy confusing (Man, I hate sin). Can I get an amen? Being a good parent can also be some of the most rewarding and fulfilling work God ever gives us. Can I get an amen?

It's nice when your children do well in the classroom or achieve success in the art, music, or sports world; however, this pales in comparison to when your children obey and worship the Lord. Megan and I have made countless parenting mistakes, but our gracious God has made none. The fact that our three kiddos are walking with the Lord is all God’s grace. This is what we care about the most.

Although we've made our share of mistakes, we've also done a few things right - Thank you, Jesus! Below are ten ways we are or have TRAINED our children that I hope can help you.

1. We expect our kids to read and study God’s Word independently, and I ask them about what they’re learning from time to time. Scripture saves (1 Timothy 4:16), sustains (Matthew 4:4), and sanctifies (helps us become more like Christ).

2. We often have family devotions in the evenings. Read more here: The Importance of Family Worship.

3. We worship together on Sunday mornings and typically talk about the sermons during and/or after the service. I quiz my kids, and Megan reminds me to not forget to enJOY God, church services, and the car ride home. :-)

4. Our kiddos usually attend youth group at our church on Wednesdays and sometimes other church youth groups and trips that we think would be good for them. We need help in training our kids to grow in their faith.

5. Rosalie & Grace Noel were discipled by godly women from our church and were part of all-female small groups at ECS. Again, we need help in training our kids to grow in their faith!

6. My kiddos have spent most of their lives in schools where Truth was taught. We are so thankful for the role TIS & ECS played in their lives.

7. We confess our sins to each other. When daddy messes up, I say specifically what I did wrong, say what I plan on improving, and ask for forgiveness. When I'm struggling to think in a Christlike way, I let my family know and ask for their prayers. James 5:16

8. I routinely exhort (strongly encourage and urge) my children when I leave the house. I remind them to give God the glory and enJOY Him (from the Westminster Catechisms). I might also tell them to serve their classmates and do what they can to bless those around them.

9. When we watch movies, listen to music, play sports, etc., we talk about Jesus and what the Bible says. We don't live a dualistic life separating our faith from everyday matters. We want our children to think and act like Jesus so we try to look at everything through a gospel lens.

10. When our children display Christ, we try to praise them for the work God is doing in them. When our children are loving, filled with joy, patient, and bearing other good fruit (Galatians 5:22-23), we want our children to know that this is far more important than the academic and athletic achievements they accomplish.

There you have it. Of course, if we do everything above in our own power and without love, we are nothing but noisy gongs and gain nothing (1 Corinthians 13:1-3). We have to constantly pray and trust that God will give the increase (1 Corinthians 3:6-8).

If you would like to share something that has worked for you or have a question about anything I shared, let me know! I would love to hear what God has taught you or help in whatever way I can. To God be the glory!

Wickhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/14805927352863007437noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-951577269167285145.post-44643464252249456722024-01-01T13:27:00.000-08:002024-01-01T13:27:30.157-08:00Start the Year Fresh With Forgiveness
Forgiveness is powerful. When someone wrongs us, but sincerely asks for forgiveness, God gives us the opportunity to display the richness of His mercy to us in Christ Jesus. We decide to no longer hold the offense against the offender and allow them to receive our gracious gift. Hopefully, this can lead to the reconciliation of the damaged relationship.

Sadly, I have wronged jillions of people in my 50 years which has created a great deal of heartache and pain. I've given dirty glances for minuscule infractions, yelled at people out of frustration and anger, and held grudges instead of tapping into the Spirit and displaying Christ. There is so much I would like to redo, but once the words leave your mouth or you execute an action, you can't take it back.

Thankfully, many people have forgiven me for my boneheaded ways (which were considerably more prevalent before my conversion 24 years ago). Thankfully, I'm increasingly hating my sin and growing in God's grace and knowledge. Thankfully, God has provided me a great church and godly friends who point me to Jesus. I've learned to not live in my past but also not forget what God has forgiven me of.

When you've been forgiven so much and understand you don't deserve the life you have, you learn to be quick to forgive others when they sin against you. It's certainly not always easy, but it is freeing and helps you move forward to better bring God the glory. Are there people you need to forgive? Do you have resentment, anger, and bitterness in your life that is preventing reconciliation from happening?

2023 is over and the new year has begun so let's reflect on what Christ did on the cross, ask those we've wronged to forgive us, and extend forgiveness to those who have wronged us. We can't control how people respond, but we can make decisions that display Christ and magnify His name. Just do it. To God be the glory!

"Bear with each other and forgive whatever grievances you may have against one another. Forgive as the Lord forgave you." Colossians 3:13

Wickhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/14805927352863007437noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-951577269167285145.post-2554313906553258182023-11-28T16:13:00.000-08:002023-11-28T16:13:52.547-08:00Seven Ideas For A More Christ-Centered Christmas
Christmas can often be a fun time of receiving silly stocking stuffers, eating cute Christmas cookies, and seeing family you haven't seen in months or years. During all of the hustle and bustle that surrounds the world's most popular holiday, let's remember what the true meaning of Christmas is. Let's remember Jesus came 2,000 years ago with a loving plan for redemption. Last year for my blog post preceding Christmas, I shared five special activities that my family has done to celebrate Christ during the Christmas season. This year, I want to share seven simple ideas of how you can have a more Christ-centered Christmas. I hope this will help you and your family celebrate the birth of Christ, God Incarnate.

1. Attend a Christmas concert at a church or school. Hearing little kids or your close friends play The First Noel, O Little Town of Bethlehem, and Joy to the World is good for our souls. These carols are lyrical masterpieces that create community and remind us of profound truths.

2. Be a blessing to a nursing home and sing classic Christmas carols to the residents there. Music is powerful and singing O Holy Night, Hark! The Herald Angels Sing, and O Come, O Come, Emmanuel is sure to bring smiles and perhaps tears to people's eyes.

3. Buy gifts for those who have far less than us. Search through Samaritan's Purse Christmas catalog, and bring clean water to a community, stand with persecuted Christians, or provide life-saving medical equipment.

4. Consider serving at a homeless shelter such as the Evansville Rescue Mission. Volunteers are needed to serve food, organize clothes, and complete clerical work. Display the love of Christ to those who are in need.

5. Elf and A Christmas Story are often at the top of people's favorite Christmas movies, but those movies aren't really about Christmas. Watch The Nativity Story, The Star, or Christmas with The Chosen: Holy Night. These movies have their weaknesses; however, they do focus on the greatest gift we have - Jesus.

6. Go on a prayer walk in your neighborhood, at your child's school, or at a local church. Walking near the people and places you are praying for might help you better know what to pray for and can show others that you care.

7. Last, but not least, read about Christ's birth (Luke 2:1-20) on Christmas Eve or Christmas or better yet, both. Get in God's Word and rejoice at the miracle of the virgin birth. Give God the glory and have your most Christ-centered Christmas ever!

"But Mary treasured up all these things and pondered them in her heart." Luke 2:19

Wickhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/14805927352863007437noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-951577269167285145.post-74635954355763929372023-10-30T04:13:00.000-07:002023-10-30T04:13:12.454-07:00The Importance of Family Worship
Before Megan and I adopted Rosalie, Grace Noel, and Josiah Lee, we were blessed to observe godly families we served with in China having family devotions in the evenings. Their beautiful example helped us understand the importance of family worship. God should be worshipped not just on Sunday mornings and during Bible class and chapels at a Christian school, He should be worshipped all the time and in every place. I can't just allow the local church and Christian school to teach my kids about Jesus. I have the enormous responsibility (and privilege) to lead my family in worshipping God in our home.

Family devotions have been a regular part of our lives, and over the years, they have looked different depending on the age of our kids. When our kids were younger, we sang and danced more. Today, we often watch Bible study videos on RightNow Media. We've catechized our kids, read from God's Word, memorized Scripture together, and used a wide selection of Christian devotionals. We always end our devotions in prayer, and we pray in the same order every time. If we have guests over, we include them in our devotions.

A special time to hear Scripture, pray, and talk about Jesus at home doesn't have to be long, but it needs to happen. Dinnertime or before bed has worked best for us because we wake up at different times. Our devotions have typically been in the living room or at the dining room table, but there's no rule saying they can't be done in a bedroom or bathtub. Be sure to use age-appropriate resources and try to get your kids actively involved in the devotions. Lecturing them for ten minutes probably isn't best regardless of how theologically correct you are. You want your kids to enjoy learning about Jesus in hopes that they receive Christ as their Lord and Savior and grow in His grace and knowledge.

Regrettably, I've made some mistakes when leading family devotions (e.g., failing to get family input, being too serious, lack of consistency). What's most important is that you're Bible-based, Christ-centered, and Spirit-filled. If you have family devotions at your home, I would love to hear what you do and what resources have helped your family. If you would like to discuss this topic further with me, please email me or give me a call. Did you know we even have pumpkin spice ramen, SPAM, and dog treats? I kid you not. I guess we need our pumpkin spice! Fall is not just a time for pumpkin spice; it's a time when many Tri-State farmers harvest their crops.

The Bible contains many harvest references because most societies were predominantly agricultural during biblical times. Additionally, the word "harvest" contains deep spiritual meaning and is a figure of speech for spiritual growth and wellness.

In Matthew 9:35-38, we can read about Jesus teaching, proclaiming the gospel, and healing diseases. He showed compassion to the helpless crowds and told his disciples, "The harvest is plentiful, but the laborers are few, therefore pray earnestly to the Lord of the harvest to send out laborers into his harvest." Jesus referred to the countless souls who needed to repent and trust in Him who were right there ready to respond.

Are you seeing that the harvest is plentiful? Do you care? Do you see that most people are lost and need to hear the good news of Jesus Christ? Are you actively sharing what Christ has done and is doing in your life?

Perhaps you're an introvert (like me), super shy (like Corrie ten Boom), lacking confidence (like Jeremiah), or a bad speaker (like Moses). We have no excuse. We are commanded to go and make disciples of all nations (Matthew 28:19). We Christians have the all-powerful Holy Spirit inside us who guides us and gives us the words we need at just the right time (Luke 12:12). If we truly love others, we'll desire that they know the greatest gift we have, Jesus Christ (Philippians 3:7-8). We'll desire that they know His peace and joy and spend eternity in Heaven (John 3:16). Ministry is not just for pastors, missionaries, Bible teachers, and Spiritual Formation Directors. If you are following Christ, you are His ambassador (2 Corinthians 5:20) and we are all to minister to those in need.

So again, what are you doing to share the love of Christ in word and deed? Let's take advantage of the opportunities God gives us to proclaim the name of Christ! And if you have an encouraging harvest story or an effective approach to engaging others in spiritual discussions, let the world know. I would love to hear how God has worked in your life and the life-changing impact He has made on you and others. To God be the glory!

Wickhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/14805927352863007437noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-951577269167285145.post-84826109362621447672023-08-28T05:06:00.001-07:002023-09-01T10:51:44.999-07:00Eight Reasons Why We Should Pray
Back in February, I talked about praying for Christ-centered education. In that post, I stated that prayer is the primary way for Christians to COMMUNICATE thanks, CONVEY hopes, CONFESS sins, and CELEBRATE God. German theologian Martin Luther famously said that he has so much to do that he shall spend the first three hours of the day in prayer. Despite being mentioned in the Bible hundreds of times, I think most of us aren't praying like Martin Luther. If you're struggling to pray even three minutes a day, perhaps the reasons I mentioned below can push you to spend more time with God in prayer.

1. Christians should devote themselves to it. Colossians 4:2 says, Continue steadfastly in prayer, being watchful in it with thanksgiving. Prayer isn't something we should only do before a meal or when we want something. We are to have a lifestyle of prayer where we constantly pray.

2. To know God and grow closer to Him. Matthew 6:6 says, But when you pray, go into your room and shut the door and pray to your Father who is in secret. And your Father who sees in secret will reward you. Prayer is a powerful privilege where we can receive God's help and better understand who He is.

3. To please God. Proverbs 15:8 says, The sacrifice of the wicked is an abomination to the LORD, but the prayer of the upright is acceptable to him. When we pray, we show interest in God and our dependence on Him. This brings God great joy.

4. To confess sins and have them forgiven. 2 Chronicles 7:14 says, if my people who are called by my name humble themselves, and pray and seek my face and turn from their wicked ways, then I will hear from heaven and will forgive their sin and heal their land. We must be honest with God and confess our crimes against Him. This is done through prayer and when done, our slate is wiped clean. Amazing grace.

5. So we don't fall into temptation. Matthew 26:41 says, Watch and pray that you may not enter into temptation. The spirit indeed is willing, but the flesh is weak. Life is full of sinful temptations, and Satan wants us to fall into temptation. Prayer helps us not fall into Satan's schemes.

6. To gain wisdom. James 1:5 says, If any of you lacks wisdom, let him ask God, who gives generously to all without reproach, and it will be given him. Jesus is the source of wisdom (Colossians 2:3), and we can go to Him and ask for the ability to discern and judge what is true and right.

7. It accomplishes much. James 5:16 says, Therefore, confess your sins to one another and pray for one another, that you may be healed. The prayer of a righteous person has great power as it is working. Prayer is far more powerful than anything we can accomplish in our own strength. We need to spend more time being still and praying to our all-powerful God.

8. Jesus did it. Mark 1:35 says, And rising very early in the morning, while it was still dark, he departed and went out to a desolate place, and there he prayed. If this is a practice that Jesus did alone and with others, I'm not sure how we can argue against it!

What are some other reasons why we should pray? I would love to hear from you and how you practice this essential spiritual discipline. Additionally, I hope you will join us at one of our four campuses before school on September 27th for See You At The Pole. More details will be coming soon about this global day of prayer!

Wickhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/14805927352863007437noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-951577269167285145.post-21672347298562069492023-07-31T03:54:00.000-07:002023-07-31T03:54:06.810-07:00Some Scripture to Soothe Back-to-School Stress
The start of school can be a time of hair-pulling stress and crazy nerves for parents and students.

What will I wear?

What do I need to bring to school?

Who will be in my classes?

Where are my classes?

Which classes are more demanding?

Who will I sit with at lunch?

Will I make the team?

Should I join the club?

How do I get on the bus?

Will Mr. Wick be hiding somewhere to scare me?

These are just a few of the questions that students ask before the first day of school (and continue to ask from time to time). And stress isn't just limited to families. Teachers also might feel a bit of pressure trying to pull everything together for the new school year. Can I get an amen?

When we're feeling stressed, this isn't a time for us to say, "He must decrease, but I must increase." No! This is a time when we need more Scripture. What are some Bible verses to help alleviate the stress and start the year on a strong note? Check these out:

Matthew 6:34 Therefore do not be anxious about tomorrow, for tomorrow will be anxious for itself. Sufficient for the day is its own trouble.

Philippians 4:6-7 Do not be anxious about anything, but in everything by prayer and supplication with thanksgiving let your requests be made known to God. And the peace of God, which surpasses all understanding, will guard your hearts and minds in Christ Jesus.

1 Peter 5:6-7 Humble yourselves, therefore, under the mighty hand of God so that at the proper time he may exalt you, casting all your anxieties on him, because he cares for you.

John 14:1 Let not your hearts be troubled. Believe in God; believe also in me.

Put these verses on your mobile and laptop wallpapers, a piece of paper in your pocket, your bathroom mirror, your fridge, your locker, and in cute framed pictures around your home. Memorize the verses, meditate on them (study and think about them), pray them in your mind and out loud, sing them, and share them with others. Just do it!

Life can be stressful, but let's keep Scripture at the forefront. Scripture is the key to fighting sin, strengthening our relationship with Christ, and living a joy-filled life in this stressful world.

Remember, if you are ever struggling with stress, want a better understanding of how to follow Christ, or need a listening ear, don't hesitate to drop me a line or pay me a visit. I'll do what I can to help and point you to the Father of mercies and God of all comfort (2 Corinthians 1:3). He is good!

Wickhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/14805927352863007437noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-951577269167285145.post-24699583492022984982023-07-13T04:07:00.000-07:002023-07-13T04:07:39.309-07:00Do You Have A Biblical Worldview?
Worldview. We throw this word around a lot, but what is a "worldview?" Simply put, a worldview is a system of firmly held beliefs concerning how we see the world and how we are to live in the world. If you're reading this, you have a worldview.

A biblical worldview is rooted in the Bible and when you aren't in the Good Book, your worldview will get diluted. You'll allow Hollywood, Netflix, TikTok, The View, Taylor Swift, Jake Paul, Kim Kardashian, Oprah, friends, and everything else to form your worldview. There are many who say they are Christian and can even explain the gospel, but when one lives in a way that isn't Bible-based, he or she doesn't have a biblical worldview.

You don't need to take a college worldviews class or be part of a small group focused on living a biblical worldview to cultivate a biblical worldview. What you need to do is be transformed by the renewal of your mind (Romans 12:2). Interpret life through the lens of the gospel instead of following the world's ways. Fill your head with God's Word and allow the Holy Spirit to form convictions in your heart so you live a God-glorifying life.

As you grow in the grace and knowledge of Jesus Christ, you'll make decisions pleasing to God concerning what you watch, wear, buy, eat, listen to, and participate in. You'll examine Scripture, pray, and ask yourself if this is the job God wants you to take, the school God wants you to attend, the vehicle God wants you to buy, and the home God wants you to purchase. There are no shortcuts to developing a biblical worldview but fostering a strong biblical worldview enables us to think more clearly about life in this troubled world. Why anyone wouldn't want that is beyond me.

If you're interested in seeing what kind of worldview you have (e.g., Christian, Marxist, postmodern), you can complete a free worldview checkup at the Summit Ministries site. I recommend filling out the short assessment with family members and discussing your results. If this is something you would like to process, please don't hesitate to reach out to me. Remember, the coffee is on me!

See to it that no one takes you captive by philosophy and empty deceit, according to human tradition, according to the elemental spirits of the world, and not according to Christ. Colossians 2:8

Wickhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/14805927352863007437noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-951577269167285145.post-37448095784271642802023-06-15T04:59:00.000-07:002023-06-15T04:59:27.411-07:00Lifespan, Life Expectancy, Life Purpose, & Life Eternal
Last week, a strong ECHS student who I see pursuing Christ asked me a great question. She mentioned Jeanne Calmart, the oldest verified person, who lived to be 122 years old (some geneticists are skeptical of this). This is more than three years older than the second oldest verified person.

The student then asked about Genesis 6:3 which says, Then the LORD said, "My Spirit shall not abide in man forever, for he is flesh: his days shall be 120 years." After God flooded the earth (Genesis 6-9), human lifespans decreased tremendously. By the time of Moses (around 1500 BC when the ancient Egyptians conquered Nubia), only one person is recorded in the Bible to have lived past 120 years, the age when Moses died. Genesis 6:3 can serve as a general rule that people won't live past 120 years. Another interpretation of Genesis 6:3 is God stated a flood would occur 120 years after He expressed disappointment with mankind.

What about Psalm 90:10a? It states The years of our life are seventy or even by reason of eighty. This can be seen as a general rule for global life expectancy (which is 73 years).

Most people want to live a long and happy life, but it's crucial that life is lived for the right purpose. Mark 8:36 says, For what does it profit a man to gain the whole world and forfeit his soul? Life isn't meant to be lived for the world and its treasures (1 John 2:15). Life is meant to be lived to bring God glory (1 Corinthians 10:31).

So why is living a God-glorifying life so important? Living a life pleasing to God is of the utmost importance because this is the key to peace and joy in this life and living forever in God's loving presence. When we seek God's will for our lives, God will bless us in numerous ways. This doesn't mean our lives will be all rainbows and unicorns, but we know that for those who love God, all things work together for good (Romans 8:28). And when we die, those who have trusted in Christ as Lord and Savior will be in God's perfect home, Heaven, where tears, pain, and death will be a thing of the past. We aren't designed to work 24/7, 365 days a year. We can read about our all-powerful God resting in Genesis 2:2-3. So the heavens and the earth and everything in them were completed. On the seventh day God had completed his work that he had done, and he rested on the seventh day from all his work that he had done.

Why did God rest? Was it because He was tired? Lazy? Bored? Uh, can we say NEGATORY?! God rested to set an example for us. We simply can't be completing tasks all of the time. We need to trust in Christ, our Sabbath rest, and rest in His finished work.

So what does that mean? Resting in Christ certainly doesn't mean we take a break from Him and His work. Jesus always did the work of the Father, but sometimes this work meant being alone and resting. Resting in Christ is a time of rejuvenation. Below are three ways you can rest in Christ and bring rest to your body and soul.

1. Rest in Christ by getting in the Word. For many of us, the summer months can be a time to slow down a bit and relax. What better time is there to read, study, memorize, meditate on, and share God's Word with others? There isn't. I seriously doubt that if you increase your time in the Word you'll feel busier and more anxious. No, the opposite is likely to happen. You're much more likely to get refreshed and feel God's rest. And why would you not want that?

2. Rest in Christ through prayer and accountability. God tells us to pray constantly (1 Thessalonians 5:17). Prayer reminds us to get our eyes off ourselves and earthly things and set our minds on things above. Prayer shows our faith in Christ and puts us to rest. Proverbs 27:17 says, Iron sharpens iron and one man sharpens another. Accountability provides opportunities to pray, encourage, teach, and confess sin, all of which can lead to rest for our weary souls.

3. Rest in Christ by singing and fasting. My mediocre voice won't ever be on The Voice or American Idol, but I sing all the time. I sing at church, conferences, work, and you might even catch me singing in my 2010 Dodge Grand Caravan. The Bible has over 400 references to singing and fifty commands to sing. Singing can bring about deep emotion that helps us rejoice and be at rest. We aren't required to fast; however, fasting can provide clarity and also cause us to truly rest in Christ.

So are you resting in Christ this summer or are you still running around like a chicken with its head cut off? How are you resting in Christ? Drop me a comment and let the world know how Jesus is your Sabbath rest!

Come to me, all who labor and are heavy laden, and I will give you rest. Matthew 11:28

Wickhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/14805927352863007437noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-951577269167285145.post-75474920063746555252023-04-16T03:05:00.001-07:002023-04-18T19:08:23.613-07:00Six Reasons to Memorize Scripture
There are many who scoff at memorization. If you can Google it, why memorize anything? Just do a quick Internet search though, and you'll find many credible sources telling you the importance of memorizing information.

Memorization is essential for learning. It helps us understand information, trains our brains to remember, and helps with cognitive decline. The more we memorize, the more we can think critically about the topic we memorize.

So what about Scripture memorization? Here are six reasons we should memorize God's Word:

1. To fight sin and Satan's attacks. Life can be tough, and we're in a battlefield. What better way to combat our sin nature and fend off the prince of this world than by the Sword of the Spirit, God's Word. I have stored up your word in my heart, that I might not sin against you. Psalm 119:11

2. To be a better encourager and provide wise counsel and comfort to others. God's Word is perfect and gives us hope in a dark world. Scripture is key to a supernatural peace and communicates wisdom so we can make the right choices. The law of his God is in his heart; his steps do not slip. Psalm 37:31

3. To testify of God's goodness and share the good news of Jesus Christ. When telling your testimony, what God is doing in your life, and the essentials of the gospel message, reciting Bible verses can make a much bigger impact! All Scripture is breathed out by God and profitable for teaching, for reproof, for correction, and for training in righteousness. 2 Timothy 3:16

4. To be transformed by the renewal of our mind and grow in the grace and knowledge of our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ. Devoting our minds to memorizing important verses, passages, chapters, and books helps strengthen and safeguard the knowledge we've acquired. The memorized Word leads to the renewal of minds and transformed lives (Romans 12:2).

5. We're told to do it. Colossians 3:16 says, Let the word of Christ dwell in you richly, teaching and admonishing one another in all wisdom, singing psalms and hymns and spiritual songs, with thankfulness in your hearts to God. The Bible isn't multiple-choice. If we truly love Jesus, we will keep His commandments (John 14:15) and do what He says.

6. Jesus did it. Dozens and dozens of times, we can read Jesus quoting Old Testament verses (e.g., Matthew 27:46-Psalm 22:1). As a 12-year-old, the teachers in the temple were amazed at Jesus' understanding and His answers (Luke 2:47), and He grew in wisdom and in favor with God and man (Luke 2:52). Let's follow Christ's example and commit to treasuring God's Word in our hearts!

So there you have it. What are some other benefits of Scripture memorization? What are you memorizing right now? I would love to hear why you love memorizing Scripture and what God has been teaching you through this essential spiritual discipline. Soli Deo gloria!

Wickhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/14805927352863007437noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-951577269167285145.post-89619332423899120172023-03-13T17:45:00.001-07:002023-03-13T17:45:52.977-07:00Cherishing Christ This Easter Season
Easter is just around the corner - April 9th to be exact. According to a recent survey by Statista.com, Easter ranks as the 11th most popular holiday in the United States. Mother's Day (#3), Labor Day (#7), and Halloween (#10) all outranked celebrating the Resurrection of Christ. Something isn't right here. Easter (or Resurrection Sunday), is a time to rejoice in Christ's victory over death, disease, and destruction. It's a time to rejoice in Christ's victory over Satan, sin, and suffering. Jesus paid the price for our sins and rose again to reconcile us to God. Because of Jesus' sacrifice on the cross, there is hope. Followers of Christ will spend eternity in Heaven and have peace and joy in this life despite the lifestorms we face. Praise King Jesus!

We of course are to cherish Christ each and every day; however, Easter is a special time of remembering His resurrection and the life we have in Him. So how can we cherish Christ this Easter season? Below are four simple ways to cherish Christ more during this Easter season. Just do it!

1. Read, study, and talk about Easter. Here are several passages to choose from: Genesis 22:9-14, Matthew 28:1-10, John 20:19-23, Romans 5:6-11, 8:3-9, and 2 Corinthians 5:14-21.

2. Watch Easter videos. Igniter Media has a variety of powerful short videos pertaining to the resurrection of Jesus Christ. If you do an Easter search on RightNow Media, you'll find several excellent choices.

3. Worship at a church service and invite others to join you. What better time is there to worship with others than at Easter? Pastors know that the sanctuaries typically have more people on Easter Sunday so they typically pull out all the stops.

4. Lead Easter-themed family devotions. Don't know where to start? Check out some of these resources: A free 8-day Easter devotional guide from Lifeway, Easter-themed books recommended by Tim Challies, and Ressurection eggs.

So how will you cherish Christ this Easter season? I would love to hear what you've done, what you're doing, and what you're going to do!

He is not here, for he has risen, as he said. Come, see the place where he lay. That's a lot of loot!

I would enjoy sharing my love story of how I met Megan or how I messed up on our first Valentine's Day date in China, but those stories will need to wait for another day (feel free to ask if you see me). I want to talk about a greater love - Jesus' love for me which enables me to love Him and others (1 John 4:19).

The Pew Research Center says there are over two billion Christians; however, this can't be right. It's much more accurate to say that over two billion people claim to be Christians. There aren't over two billion people loving Jesus on this planet. So what does it mean to love Jesus? Let's see what Scripture says. Specifically, let's see what the one who is commonly identified as the disciple whom Jesus loved wrote.

1. John 14:23-24 says, Jesus answered him, "If anyone loves me, he will keep my word, and my Father will love him, and we will come to him and make our home with him. Whoever does not love me does not keep my words. And the word that you hear is not mine but the Father's who sent me. To love Jesus means that we obey His commands. If we aren't in His Word though, how can we know His commands? We can't. If we truly love God, we will read His Word regularly, constantly thinking about it, and delighting in what He says (Psalm 1).

2. John 15:12-13 "This is my commandment, that you love one another as I have loved you. Greater love has no one than this, that someone lay down his life for his friends. To love Jesus means that we love people. Even the messy ones? Yup. Even the messy ones. But we're never messy, right? So whether you're an introvert like me or an extrovert like my wife, we must be upward and outward-focused and engage others. We must serve people with joy (1 Peter 4:10), encourage who we can (1 Thessalonians 5:11), and point them to Christ (2 Corinthians 5:20). This isn't an option. Just do it.

So there are a couple MAJOR points in what it means to love Jesus. Loving Jesus means you are a doer of the Word (which means you need to get in your Bible) and you love people. Easy peasy lemon squeezy! So how are you doing loving Jesus? I would love to hear from you about what you are learning, what has worked, and what has been messy!

And he said to him, "You shall love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your mind. Matthew 22:37

Wickhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/14805927352863007437noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-951577269167285145.post-6421145975957624722022-12-23T17:38:00.005-08:002023-06-08T07:25:08.796-07:00Growing in God's Grace & Knowledge in 2023 and Beyond
There are over eight billion people on this blue planet, and over 330 million of us call ourselves Americans. We are a diverse and highly individualistic group, and millions of us will once again blissfully announce our New Year's resolutions. These resolutions often pertain to getting a six-pack, eating more greens, and keeping paper in our pockets. Many of these resolutions are quite noble. Regrettably, most of us will fail at keeping our New Year's resolutions.

What if we took a different approach and set a few SMART goals that pertain to growing in God's grace and knowledge? What simple goals can we set? How can we mature as believers and bring God the glory? Below are three goals I want you to strongly consider.

1. Come Up With A Bible Reading Plan & Get In The Word Every Day. If you don't know where to start, check out one of these Bible Gateway reading plans. Studying God's Word is crucial to knowing Christ and knowing how to live life in a way that honors Him.

2. Memorize Scripture On A Regular Basis. Filling our minds with Bible verses and storing them in our hearts helps us fight sin (Psalm 119:11) and Satan (Matthew 4:1-11), can provide others Christlike counsel and comfort, and better enables us to teach and share the gospel.

3. Meet With Believers At Least Once A Week. Despite what our culture teaches, we aren't made to be independent, but interdependent. We are made for relationship with God and others. There are so many ways to grow in God's grace and knowledge - youth/small group, prayer meetings, Bible studies, Sunday School, church services, coffee or meals with others, and more. What are you waiting for?

What are some other ways we can grow in the grace and knowledge of our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ? I would love to hear from you!

But grow in the grace and knowledge of our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ. To him be the glory both now and to the day of eternity. Amen. 2 Peter 3:18

Wickhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/14805927352863007437noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-951577269167285145.post-34009705745249971682022-11-30T19:16:00.001-08:002023-06-08T07:26:15.939-07:00Celebrating Christ During the Christmas Season
Christmastime is a time that countless people can't get enough of...

decorating the Christmas tree and house with a gazillion lights

chomping on peppermint bark and other yummy Christmas goodies

listening to Christmas classics while the fake fire crackles on the TV screen

watching Elf, Home Alone, A Christmas Story, or some other "Christmas" movie

These are all fun Christmas activities that we might enjoy, but is this what Christmas is about? To help my family remember that Jesus is not only the reason for the season but the reason for life, we celebrate Christ in some unique ways during the Christmas season. Below are some activities you might want to consider during this year's Christmas season!

1. Advent Calendar - We have used a simple Advent calendar to help count down the days to Christmas. When our kiddos were little, they would get super excited to open the window to see a Christmas symbol that we would discuss before saying a prayer.

2. Advent Candles - For many years, we have lit Advent candles on an Advent wreath on the four Sundays preceding Christmas. The fifth candle is a white candle at the center of the wreath known as the Christ candle, and we light it on Christmas Eve. I discuss the symbolism behind the candles and wreath and read Scripture pertaining to Christmas.

3. Advent Devotional Book - For our family devotions in the evenings, we have watched videos on RightNow Media, talked about the sermons we heard on Sundays, or memorized and discussed Scripture being taught and learned in the classroom. During December, we typically read Let's Go Straight to Bethlehem by Ray Pritchard. It's a simple read where we retrace the ancient journey to experience the mystery, wonder, and glory of Jesus' birth.

4. Christmas Eve Service - We have gotten decked out to attend evening services on Christmas Eve. We sing classic Christmas hymns, carefully light candles, hear a Christ-centered sermon, and take family pictures around all the Christmas decor.

5. Jesse Tree - A few years ago, we were gifted with this Jesse Tree. It comes with a devotional book with a reading for the 25 ornaments that are to be hung. Here is a great site that tells you more about the Jesse Tree and how you make this a part of your Christmas traditions.

What are some ways you celebrate Christ during the Christmas season? What my social media accounts don't show is that life isn't always hunky-dory. Life can definitely be difficult, demanding, and depressing at times. Despite this, we are told to give thanks in all circumstances; for this is the will of God in Christ Jesus for you (1 Thessalonians 5:18). How does one do this when family members are clashing, your finances have taken a hit, or the minds and bodies of loved ones are being destroyed by disease? It may not be easy all the time, but here are some simple and essential spiritual practices we can put into place so we complain less and thank God more. To God be the glory!

1. READING God's Word - The Bible is God's words to us and provides us the answers to life. The Bible reminds us that every good and perfect gift is from above (James 1:17) and equips us to be ATMs (automated thanking machines). Reading and studying your Bible will help you be more joyful and grateful for life.

2. REMEMBERING God's Goodness - My first date with Megan, holding my children for the first time, being offered a job at ECS, God opening my eyes and giving me a new heart, and the list goes on and on. Take time to look back on all that God has done for you! The LORD has done great things for us; we are glad. Psalm 145:17

3. REFLECTING on God's Splendor - Often I'm navel-gazing when I should be setting my mind on things above (Colossians 3:2). As I meditate on my Heavenly Father and Christ who sits at His right hand, my mind is filled with only beauty. I see a holy God who shines the light of His glory - a light that I can actually shine on others.

4. REQUESTING God's Help - We can't do it alone. Life can be overwhelming, and we need to cry out to God. God is there for us, but we need to get on our knees and admit our dependence on Him. Be humble and communicate continuously with the Creator of the universe. When we cry out to God, He sees our hearts and responds with love (Romans 5:8).

5. RESTING in God - I'm a doer who likes to check off boxes. That isn't always bad, but we must learn to quiet ourselves, be still, and acknowledge that God is sovereign and reigns supreme (Job 42:2). I need to slow down and trust that God has complete control of everything. Take a walk with Megan, go fishing with Josiah Lee, have a meal with my daughters - simply enJOY the life God has given us.

What are some ways you cultivate a thankful heart? I would love to hear from you!

Continue steadfastly in prayer, being watchful in it with thanksgiving. Colossians 4:2

Wickhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/14805927352863007437noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-951577269167285145.post-63137819057008146512022-10-25T17:00:00.003-07:002023-06-08T07:27:41.046-07:00Why Go to Church?
Although I'd like to think that you would learn a great deal in one of my high school Bible classes, it simply wouldn't be enough. We need to go to church. Seven years ago, Grammy award-winning pop star Justin Bieber said, "...you don't need to go to church to be a Christian. If you go to Taco Bell, that doesn't make you a taco." This might be a true statement (I praise Jesus that I'm not a taco); however, I don't know any strong Christians who aren't worshipping at a local church on Sundays. In fact, most strong Christians are probably serving at their local church in some capacity. When I've heard people say that they don't need to go to church, they tend to be people who aren't exactly spittin' out Scripture like the Apostle Paul. Over the years, I've heard some really interesting excuses as to why we don't need to go to church. I could share a million reasons why we should want to go to church on Sunday mornings, but I'll just start with four. :-)

1. God's Word Is Preached - At a Bible-based church, the pastor has spent significant hours in preparation to preach a Spirit-filled sermon that teaches, rebukes, corrects, and trains us how to be Christ-centered people. I have a gifted pastor who clarifies the text for me and helps me better understand who God is. He helps me better understand what is expected of me in building God's kingdom.

2. You Worship With Other Believers - I'm an introvert, but the music sounds so much better when I sing with others! I don't possess mad musical skills, but my heart is often moved during corporate worship. Additionally, I hear Scripture read with reverence, crucial prayers that can only be heard at church, take part in communion with my brothers and sisters, and celebrate the baptisms of new believers.

3. To Become Stronger Christians - When you go to the gym, you get stronger. Sure, you can work out at home, but the gym has more equipment and people to push you. At church, you are surrounded by godly people who listen, ask questions, keep you accountable, provide counsel and encouragement, and maybe even discipline you. Furthermore, gospel-centered churches have libraries with solid resources that support what Scripture says.

4. To Bring God Glory - Worshipping at a church is important because it brings God glory. It brings God joy when he sees like-minded people from all walks of life come together to praise His name. Why wouldn't you want to do that on Sunday morning? What better thing do you have to do on Sunday morning than gather with God's people and worship Jesus Christ? Let's do this. Let's get excited about worshipping together on Sunday mornings and bring God the glory!

Please join the conversation! What are some other reasons why we should want to go to church on Sunday mornings?

not neglecting to meet together, as is the habit of some, but encouraging one another, and all the more as you see the Day drawing near. Hebrews 10:25

Wickhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/14805927352863007437noreply@blogger.com2tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-951577269167285145.post-1344431947969053742022-09-05T04:32:00.002-07:002023-06-08T07:26:59.573-07:00Discipling New Believers
A few days ago, a colleague told me they have a heart for new Christians at our school and want to see them nourished and rooted strongly in Christ. I love hearing that. This is how we should be. So what should our response be to those who make a profession of faith? This is what I recommend:

1. Someone should meet and pray with the new believer every week, two weeks, or month. It's hard to believe that I met Carol 25 years ago when I started teaching geography at Frankfort Middle School (FMS), home of the Hot Dogs. Carol taught choir at FMS and Fred, my father-in-law, taught math there. Megan and her sister Mindy graduated from Frankfort High School in the early 90s. Yes, we were all once Hot Dogs. :-)

Carol used to supervise a study hall in my 6th-grade classroom, and I can remember her pointing to the massive world map and telling me how her daughter taught in China. I thought that was interesting, but I never in my wildest dreams thought that only a few years later, I would also be teaching in the Middle Kingdom and that Fred and Carol would visit me as my in-laws. God is AMAZING!

Carol has been a huge blessing to me and our family over the years, and I wish everyone could meet her. Below are just a few ways Carol displays Christ and gives God the glory. If you know Carol, I'm sure you will wholeheartedly agree with me!

1. Carol understands long-suffering. That sentence should be in ALL CAPS. God has chosen Carol to live a life that clearly shows others that she follows the Suffering Servant, Jesus Christ. She is strong in character, wise in her decisions, and patiently persevering despite what her circumstances may be. Carol focuses on the cross and lives a gospel-centered life.

2. Carol possesses self-control. Sometimes people are mean, foolish, or even worse, both (never me, of course). Regardless of how people might treat Carol, Carol is the definition of calm, cool, and collected. She is one of those people that you wonder when she sins. While I want to smash people like raisins for the most minute things, Carol doesn't get overly emotional and irrational when the going gets tough.

3. Carol is loyal. This is an understatement. Carol is loyal to her church, husband, family, and friends. She's an extremely hard worker who puts others before herself. We never have to be concerned that Carol won't help her loved ones, despite the situation and even when most wouldn't. She is clearly dedicated to loving God and loving others.

4. Carol is often joyful. While I have to tell my face to smile on occasion, it's an uncommon sight to not see Carol smiling. She is super positive about life, and it shows. Carol smiles when she meets people, when she is watching something entertaining, and she definitely smiles big when she sings. I need some Carol to rub off on me!

Carol - We are looking forward to seeing you soon and celebrating your birthday! God is good!

For you formed my inwards parts; you knitted me together in my mother's womb. I praise you, for I am fearfully and wonderfully made. Wonderful are your works; my soul knows it very well. Psalm 139:13-14

Wickhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/14805927352863007437noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-951577269167285145.post-84744265242543616712021-01-01T06:25:00.000-08:002021-01-01T06:25:32.737-08:00My Ten Most Popular Facebook Pictures in 2020
Below are the most popular pictures taken and posted on my Facebook account (all but three via Instagram) in 2020. Below are some ways that we rejoiced this year. If you're looking for more, here are past Wickersham highlights: 2010, 2011, 2012, 2013, 2014, 2015, 2016, 2017, 2018, & 2019. Rejoice!

January - Josiah Lee plays in his first-ever organized basketball game as a member of the Huskies in an Upward Basketball league. I can't say enough about how Upward Basketball is a slam dunk.

February - Grace Noel and I go to Memphis where she guest plays for an older Sporting SI squad in a college soccer showcase. She knocks in her first goal for the club, and the team leaves with two wins and a tie.

March - Schools close their buildings and Megan and I start providing emergency remote learning. I tap into my Japanese side and create a YouTube channel for school purposes and learn how to use Google Meet and Zoom.

April - I get the honor to give the middle school & high school Easter chapel talk at ECS. I continue to learn that I strongly prefer speaking to a live audience instead of into a camera. Despite my introverted ways, I really do like seeing people.

May - Megan and I find ourselves doing activities we haven't done in ages. Occasionally, I skateboard with Josiah Lee, and Megan and I visit the tennis courts. I don't ever remember as a 16-year-old getting sore from skateboarding. What happened?

June - Josiah Lee and I go camping and fishing at Beall Woods State Park in southeastern Illinois, and the entire Wickersham clan visit Gulf Shores, Alabama at the end of the month. Everyone enjoys the beach, and to my delight, I catch several new species.

July - We make a stop in Montgomery, Alabama, and meet up with some old "China" friends. I also decide to accept a club soccer position that allows me to coach Josiah Lee and see him hit the back of the net and dish out some assists.

August - I complete my third two-week course and earn an Evangelism & Leadership in Crisis certificate from Wheaton College, Megan's alma mater. My soccer squad loses their first three matches, but they win four of their six matches in October. HUGE improvement.

September - We are thankful to see Rosalie and Grace Noel competing on the soccer field together. ECHS has a dream season and goes 9-1-1 during the regular season and finish with a #7 ranking in Class 1A. Rosalie served as one of the captains again and is named ISCA Academic All-State for the second time.

October - Despite nearly getting in a panic after I spotted a bear, we have a great time during our fall break in Gatlinburg, Tennessee. At the end of the month, ECHS wins the NCSAA soccer tourney, and Grace Noel is named to the all-tournament team.

November - Josiah Lee starts playing basketball for ECS, and I give a presentation about Eric Liddell at Faith Bible Church. Grace Noel has a match that Sunday morning, but we leave it early so she can hear me talk about the "Flying Scotsman."

December - We celebrate Christ's advent with Megan's parents. Fred comes home from the nursing home on Christmas Eve, and we drop off some gifts with my parents. God is good.

Wickhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/14805927352863007437noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-951577269167285145.post-5203376055583822142020-09-29T04:26:00.000-07:002020-09-29T04:26:28.117-07:00Happy 75th Birthday, Fred. Love, Your Son-In-Law
Today is my father-in-law's birthday - the big 75. That's three quarters of a century of living. Wow. I've known Fred for 23 years now which is half my life and longer than I've known Megan.

Fred and I taught together at Frankfort Middle School (FMS), home of the Hot Dogs. He taught math, and I taught geography. We didn't say much to each other during our FMS days, but I had (and have) a great deal of respect for this meek man of God. I can clearly remember when Fred retired from teaching, he presented a Christ-centered message to the faculty and staff on his last day of work. Fred could have bragged about the countless number of students he impacted or told teaching stories that would have made us crack up, but instead, the last thing he did was make sure we understood the importance of sharing our faith. Why haven't I been talking to this guy more?

It might have been a year later that I found myself in a men's Bible study group with Fred that met every month at the Jim Dandy restaurant in Frankfort. During our Bible studies, Fred heard me confess some not so small sins, sob like a little child, and provide a small group devotion that I'm sure showed how I was a baby believer; however, Fred was not judgmental. In fact, the next summer, Fred called me to ask me if I would like to meet Megan. Fred might be a man of few words, but when he said something, I knew to listen.

I'm not sure where I would be if God didn't prompt Fred to give me that call. I owe a ton to Fred Downs, and I will never be able to repay him for the eternal impact he has made in my life. Fred is patient, loyal, kind, and humble - all characteristics I have struggled with at times. So often I've seen Jesus in Fred, and I have often wished I was more like him. I'm thankful God brought us together, and I'm thankful our lives will be spent worshiping Jesus forever.

Happy birthday, Fred. I love you.

The LORD bless you and keep you; the LORD make his face to shine upon you and be gracious to you; the LORD lift up his countenance upon you and give you peace.
